Lightning E Motors Produces
Lightning motors produce commercial electric vehicles, counting cargo vans, passenger vans, shuttle buses, ambulances, school cars and recreational vehicles. It imagines making up to 3,000 cars by 2023 and bringing its first electric transit vans by the end of 2021. The Loveland, Colorado-based company has been deploying zero-emission vehicles for profitable fleets since 2017.
Lightning buys chassis for its vehicles from other automakers and then retrofits them with battery packs and other skills needed to convert them to electrified powertrains. “Proterra’s battery are premium technology for premium vehicles,” Lightning e Motors CEO Tim Reeser said in a declaration. “We are very content to be able to offer their batteries on our vehicles.”
Benefits of Lightning E Motors
It’s fitting that as proposals open this week in the 2022 Colorado Industrial Awards, we circle back with Tim Reeser, CEO of 2018 winner Lightning Systems, today Lightning e Motors. Reeser’s high-flying EV systems builder is the first CMA winner to go public — though, we think, not the last.
Company Week: Tim, the first time we spoke, in 2014 or so, you were getting Lightning off the ground, and I was launching Company Week. Today you’re CEO of a community company, and I’m still trying to grow a small, local media commercial. What’s incorrect with that picture?
Tim Reeser: [Laughs.] Sadly, as we all distinguish, it’s not all kicks and snickers. There are approximately days when I long for a small business where I could get things done, instead of right now, where every decision requires 13 lawyers’ approval before I can say a word, so it’s a very different world. I’m enjoying it, but some days I look fondly and am jealous of where you’re at.
Seriously, congratulations on the success. So, what’s altered in the short time since you’ve gone public, from this sleepy little growth story in Colorado to a publicly traded company, for both the company and you?
Yeah, from a corporate standpoint, I’ll share some things your readers might enjoy. As a private company, my managers’ and officers’ [D&O] insurance was about $100,000 a year, essentially our claim insurance. Our base premium is $5 million a year now. And I have a $15 truckload per year holding or deductible. So the first $15 million of any claim you pay directly is a $5 million premium.
Transitional Supply Chain and Creating
It’s the same thing in manufacturing: There’s no option to be a small manufacturer anymore; you have to get to critical mass. In with the supply chain and get to critical mass with labour and overhead costs. That means custody of a factory busy and having a big sufficient factory.
The market inflected around: A year ago was the significant part of what allowed us to go public. As our costs slowed and we continued to grow, the market started saying, “Hey, we want electric vehicles, trucks and buses.” As we found our niche in this interplanetary, we can say, “We can be big, there’s a huge scale opportunity. If we can be a public company because we have the chance and business to scale.”
So those two belongings had to come together: If we didn’t have that scale, it wouldn’t have made sense for us to talk about successful public. If but when you talk about scaling, the quantity of money and capital required. It be a significant general manufacturing company, we wanted the investment capital. Those two things came composed, but certainly, it has altered my job.
Electric vehicles are Saving the Climate and our Lives
The largest source of climate contamination in the United States? Transport. To solve the weather crisis, we need to make the cars on our roads as clean as possible. We have only a period left to change how we use energy to avoid the worst impacts of weather change.
Emissions from cars and cars are not only bad for our earth but also our health. Air pollutants from gasoline- and diesel-powered vehicles cause asthma, bronchitis, cancer, and premature death.
The long-term health impacts of localized air pollution last an area. In with the effects borne out in asthma attacks, lung damage, and heart conditions.
